February 13-16 (Friday through Monday) is the 18th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). To participate, we at Anamalai’s Natural History Society took students from Nachiar Vidyalayam birding at Feeder Canal Road, Aliyar.

Anamalai’s Natural History Society

The session was conducted by T R Shankar Raman, scientist at Nature Conservation Foundation. During the time frame children were taught to identify birds, and how to enter their checklists for documentation. The GBBC was one of the first demonstrations that the Internet could be used to collect bird checklists and was instrumental in the creation of eBird back in 2002.
A big thanks to NCF and team especially Mr. P. Jeganathan for organizing the event.
Below is the list of 28 birds spotted during the count:
The same has been uploaded online at www.ebird.org

E-Bird

eBird collects millions of sightings each month from around the world. These observations have been put to use for conservation of birds and their habitats, based on when and where they will be appearing during migration. If you have checklists of birds while birding in / around Anamalai’s update them at ebird and share the checklists with us! Your birds matter!
