In partnership with Starvoirs, one of India’s expert Stargazing tour organizers, we bring to you, Pollachi’s first star-gazing itinerary on the event of the most awaited Lyrid Meteor Shower, one of the oldest known meteor showers, that’s expected to peak during the 22-23 weekend of April 2023.
With the temperature soaring sky-high, beat the summertime blues by traveling to the foothills of Anamalais, which boasts of pleasant weather post sundown, and gaze at the twinkling stars in the night sky.
What is the Lyrid meteor shower?
The Lyrid Meteor shower peaks on April 22nd & 23rd. Particles of dust shed by the long-period Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher cause the Lyrid meteor shower. The meteor shower at its peak has 20 Meteors /hour. The meteor shower is known for its fireball meteors which are generally long and bright.
Where to observe:
Even though the Meteor shower’s radiant point is the constellation Lyra, The meteors are observed all over the night sky.
What’s the agenda for the night:
– Telescopic observation of the Milkyway
– Moon Gazing
– Observe the waxing crescent moon by evening 6.30 and observe it for an hour.
– The waxing crescent will look stunning through a telescope.
What objects can be observed during the night?
Saturn and its ring, Jupiter and its bands can be clearly observed, and nebulae, open clusters, and globular clusters shall be observed too.
How do we observe the meteor shower?
The meteors will be visible to the naked eye. We don’t need a telescope to observe them. All we need to do is to keep our eyes on the sky and vigilantly look for meteors. Nevertheless, telescope observation will be done simultaneously while observing meteors.

Tour leader: The event will be led by Sarath, a committed professional who finds joy in Identifying, encouraging, and promoting science, science talent, and scientific thinking. Sarath travels widely across places organizing and coordinating public seminars as well as sky-watching sessions. A postgraduate in physics from the University of Kerala. He’s currently pursuing his M.Phil. in physics with astrophysics as a specialization. His research work is in high-energy astrophysics focusing on Gamma-Ray bursts.
